Beta Reading…
We do have a system where people can list themselves as beta readers in their profiles. However, I've been receiving a lot of e-mail lately from both people looking for a beta and those offering their services as one.

Please post a comment here if either of these applies to you. Hopefully we can match up more willing betas with compatible authors if we have a single post right on the front page for people to express their interest. Feel free to list any information that you feel might be helpful, such as the type of stories you write or are looking for and time commitment required. Thanks!

Elven_Fforestydd and Valadhielofimladris, use the contact link on my author's page, I'd be happy to help!

I am willing to be a beta reader if someone needs me.

I will beta: Slash or Gen fiction, no Het (sorry, girls are yucky), All ratings from G-NC17. I reserve the right to refuse betaing your story if it contains a pairing or kink I cannot stomach.

Contact info on my author's page.

Unfortunately, writing and proofing my own stories takes up nearly all of my free time. However, and I really hope this will be accepted as constructive, I'd like to see betas looking at summaries, warnings, and chapter notes. Some of my friends (I'm an older lady, btw) really enjoy LOTR fanfiction and this site in particular, but they keep telling me about stories they start, because they are well-written and have good ideas, but two or three chapters in (without warning) they find themselves in the middle of some heavy sexual content. All I'm suggesting is that betas and authors take a good look at the warnings Adora has provided, understand them, and use them appropriately. Again, I hope this will be taken in the spirit it was intended. I'm not judging, just asking for a little courtesy on behalf of those who are more sensitive to subject matter.

Re: the above comment. I believe it states that if in doubt, over-rate ones story, rather than under-rate it, which is good advice.

I am willing to have ideas bounced off me regarding plot or canon, being a Tolkien nerd, although not a purist in the case of AU. ( I can usually weave canon into AU, thanks to Tolkien creating such a massive myth and often contradicting himself in HoMe ) I can look at sentence construction, dialogue, characterization and check canon facts if the author has no time, or is unsure where to look. If I don't know, I know people who do d;-)

Stories I will not look at, sorry, are Legomances, Girl-falls-into-Middle-earth, self-inserts, Mortal-Elf pairings, ( unless some-one writes Aegnor and Andreth, or Túrin and Beleg ) Anything Elf-centric, dark or slash is more than fine by me, since that's my choice of reading. I'll likewise be interested in anything involving lands and peoples little mentioned in the books such as Khand, the Harad, Rhun, etc, or Ages other than the Third, since I am a First Age fan primarily.

I must stress I am not a true beta, since I go to others to check my own work, but I can more easily * see * other authors work than my own. I do enjoy people discussing their ideas and brainstorming most of all.

I'd be willing to beta. I'll help with grammar, plot and character development or just someone to bounce ideas off of. Anything R or lower. I don't mind violence or torture ether.
- Elven_Fforestydd on Oct 09 2008 02:48 pm

Coment regarding xFanarix:

You are a true beta if you're checking other's work. I both write and beta, and I use an outside source, sometimes two, for my work.

As for anyone else, contact should be in my profile information. I willbeta absolutely anything, and I am very grammar and spelling oriented, as well as language picky. I often beta for people whose second language is English and generally they have a hard time with proper verb and pronoun use. If you are interested, contact me. I'll be here until the new year.

I would be willing to be a beta-reader - I'm old enough that I don't get easily offended by more mature themes.

I'm not that hot on Elvish languages but that's something I'm looking to learn.

Feel free to get in touch.

I am new here but would be willing to be a BETA reader. I am willing to read just about anything, though I prefer not a lot of violence. I am willing to offer my services to anyone in need of a beta reader. Send me an email if interested.
- a_kasteyo on Oct 16 2008 09:03 pm
I've never been a beta, or written anything, but i'd be more than willing to beta for anyone!
- PlutoBum on Oct 17 2008 02:33 pm
I'm looking for a beta, anyone willing to help me with this? If so contact me, I won't bite. :).

- Elbe on Oct 24 2008 10:50 am
Never mind, I found one.
- Elbe on Oct 26 2008 07:02 pm
Hey I am also kinda new here. However, I would like to ask for someone to beta my stuff for me.

I will take critism, but please can whoever I please be constructive? Thanks
- AragornArwenFan on Nov 01 2008 01:44 am
I am willing to be a beta reader, even though sometimes I'm a bit busy with my other activities. I'm not a native English speaker so I'm not that good in checking grammar issues. However, I am able to comment on characterization, dialogue, canon issues and plot.

Basically any LotR or original fiction of any genre goes, but plese don't send me stories with slash or graphic sex, since those are not really my cup of tea. I don't mind violence, bad language etc., if it stays within good taste (to me it means that anything short of the grossest and excruciatingly detailed goes).
- Formegil on Nov 13 2008 03:59 am
I really need a beta. If you'd be happy to help please leave a comment - I'll look again sometime soon.

- Sage on Nov 20 2008 10:38 am

- Elven_Fforestydd on Nov 20 2008 11:21 am
I'm willing to beta bookverse up to T/PG-13 rating. (No slash or sex of any type.) I'm accredited with PerfectImagination, so you can find me there or contact me via this site.
- Charli800 on Nov 22 2008 05:07 am
AragornArwenFan: You can send an email to any of the people on this site who've said they'll beta by going to their profile page and clicking 'contact'. Let them know if you have a story plot in mind and what you need help with and then wait for their reply.
- Charli800 on Nov 22 2008 05:11 am
I am available to beta for anyone that is in need. I'm very open minded in regards to subject matter. Feel free to email me.
- KetsuekiRyu on Nov 30 2008 07:10 pm

I'm in need of a beta. I already have two, but they both are busy at the moment, so one more would be more than welcome.

Mostly I need someone who is good with grammar and punctuation, as English is not my first language.

I write elf-slash and my stories are mostly fluffy and romance, mixed with minor angst and sometimes hurt-comfort. I can cope with strict canon, but I also write AU, depends on the plot. And one more thing: my beta needs tolerate Mpreg, as I sometimes write Mpreg-stories.

And oh yes, my favorite characters are Imladris' elves and Thranduil. Sometimes Valar too are messing with my elves, but I don’t write with other races than these two at all.

Hi I'm new to fan fiction and i'm looking for a beta
- elvenchild_82 on Dec 12 2008 03:44 pm
I'd like to beta. I'm not fussy about slash or violence and I'll be on almost every day. This would be my first time betaing on a fanfic site though I do proof'read essays for people at home.
- coltzen on Dec 20 2008 01:13 pm
I'm looking for someone to beta my work-in-progress. I'm hoping to find somone who is good with plot development and battle scenes and can also help out with a little Elvish (Sindarin preferably). I've only written two chapters so far but those are still subject to change. I'm open to suggestion but would rather not have my work belittled or re-written.
A little about my fic:
Set post-WOTR, introduces an orginal charachter but NOT a Mary-Sue. It's a LITTLE bit of a Legomance, but I'd like for it to be subtle and as uncheesy as possible. I am serious about my story and have tried to stay as close to Tolkien facts as possible. If you're up for it, send me an email! I can fill you in on more details there. Thanks!!!

elvenchild_82: I would be happy to help you, you can contact me on my page.
- Sage on Jan 04 2009 04:26 am

I would love if someone could beta read my stories :)

If you have read any of my stuff, you should know that I really don't put anything graphic in them. No torture, really, and I'd like to think of my stories as comedic. Please help me, I'm thinking of becoming an author, and an outside opinion would really help. Thank you!

Please contact me via review or something...I don't know how I'd get in touch with someone willing to beta me other than review on this site.

- callerofcrows on Jan 08 2009 06:15 pm
I'm totally willing to beta. I've done it before and don't really object to any type of story. I'm willing to help with any part of story development (plot, construction, editing, etc) so feel free to contact me!
