If you've contacted me recently...
I've had some serious issues with the e-mail server lately, resulting in the loss of quite a few messages over the past few weeks. The issue is resolved now as I've transferred to a much more stable and reliable e-mail host.

If you've sent me mail over the past couple of weeks and haven't received a reply, please send it again through the regular contact link and I will get back to you as soon as possible. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Vintage Awards
This is a relatively young Livejournal Fanfiction award group.

The nomination process is similar to the MEFA's, where the nominee must give the name of the story, a link, and an author email, also categories, such as Love, Relationship, etc but the voting process is much simpler: once the story is posted on the community, a member simply clicks 'Yes,' below the story to indicate that they believe the story deserves a Vintage Award.

To become a member, simply go to the community and join. The moderator will send you an email confirming your membership and you may then have access to nominate stories, or to look through the list of stories already nominated and to vote.

Unlike the MEFA's this community does accept NC17 stories as well as the lower ratings.

Many thanks, and take care,

MEFA Check Ballots
Every year, the Middle-earth Fanfiction Awards posts a "draft" version of our categories and subcategories (and the stories competing in each), which authors and other fandom members can look over before this information is displayed on our website. The purpose is to give people, especially authors, a chance to ask for their stories to be moved.

You can also read more about how checkballots work at

Check ballots will be posted at two places:

You can reply to any check ballot to request a piece be moved.

If you want a story move, please let us know by 11:59 PM, July 14, at the latest.

Recording Project!
I'm posting this on behalf of one of our members. Sounds like a lot of fun!

Hi Fellow LotR fans!

This summer, my friends and I are doing an online recording project! We are going to do an audio drama of a LotR fanfiction called “The Rohan Pride Trilogy” which is written by Anolinde. Last summer, I got the author’s permission to do an audio adaptation of her brilliant story, but lacked the time to get the project started.

This is where you come in. If you are interested in doing any of the following, then please contact me through my email which is on my author bio page!

Script Writing: Before we can record, we need to put the trilogy into a usable script.

Acting: If you’d like to act in this, please send me a clip of you reading a passage from the story.

Engineering/recording: I already have a producer for this, but if you’d like to help with the technical aspects of the project, you can still contact me and I will get you in touch with him!

If you have any other ideas of jobs you might like to do, please contact me! I’d love to hear from you!

P.S. I’m including the story info as well!

Great New Movie with Sean Bean!
From time to time, I receive mail from production companies who are promoting movies starring LotR actors. I don't often post about these, especially if the movie is something everyone will already know about.

However, this one really piqued my interest. It's a new movie starring Sean Bean and he looks so much like Boromir in this movie that it's uncanny. Beyond that, it just looks like a very good film.

The company producing this movie has offered to sponsor a contest for people to win tickets to go see it here on LotRFF. If I receive feedback to indicate that there's an interest in this, I'll probably take them up on it.

In the meantime, here's what they say about the movie:

The film is a historical epic set during the deadly pandemic of the 14th Century. Sean Bean stars as the fearsome knight Ulrich, who is tasked with leading his group of mercenaries to a remote village where it is rumoured there are no traces of the pestilence. Their quest is to hunt down a necromancer - someone able to bring the dead back to life.

Their journey is treacherous and filled with danger; encountering deadly bandits and vicious witch-burnings that will put their faith to the ultimate test. Though it's upon entering the village that their true horror begins...

Have a few minutes to spare? Please help out!
Hello LotRFF community members,

I am very grateful to Adora for posting a link to a 10-minute survey, which I hope you can complete. I am a first-year PhD student at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California. My research will greatly benefit from your participation.

I have to assure you -- I am a LotR fan as much (if not more) as I am a graduate student. However, as a graduate student, I really stand to benefit from your participation in this survey. It is for the term project for my class on online communities, professored by Dmitri Williams. Given my interests, I am doing a project on Lord of the Rings fans. That is why I am approaching you and this community.

Don't worry -- the survey is anonymous and your responses will be kept confidential. It is easy and fun, and at the end, I explain what the study is about, which I'm sure you'll enjoy.

You can take the survey here.

Thank you so much! I greatly appreciate your input.

Regards, Ritesh

Server Fees
Luckily we haven't had much of an issue with server fees over the past several months. The donations we received back in November combined with my own funds have been holding us over pretty well.

Unfortunately, things are a bit tight this month. As you all know, this is a large, heavily trafficked site and it gets a little expensive for one person. So as much as I hate to ask for donations, it's necessary that I do so every few months to make sure this place continues to run smoothly.

Just to be clear, this is a free site. It always has been and always will be. Donations are completely voluntary and I certainly don't expect anyone to contribute unless they choose to and have a few dollars to spare.

Please consider making a small contribution if you can. It doesn't need to be much... even just a couple of dollars, the price of a cup of coffee or a magazine can go a long way if enough people are willing to give just a little.

Thanks so much, guys. I'm sorry that I have to ask at all but I do really, really appreciate any help you can give.

Beta Readers! (updated version)
I know I posted one of these a while back, but with new folks coming in all the time, new stories being written, older ones being revised and so forth, it's always good to see who is currently available and who needs beta reading services.

I'm sure most of you know what a beta reader is. But for the few of you who may not, it's basically someone who will help you revise and improve your writing.

This can be anything from checking your stories for issues with spelling, grammar and formatting to helping you with style issues, plot ideas and story direction. Every author/beta reader arrangement works a little differently depending on preferences on both sides. Just as published authors use editors, most of the very best fanfiction writers rely on beta readers to help them make the most out of their stories.

If you're willing to volunteer as a beta reader, please leave a comment here, along with any personal preferences or limitations you have on the material you'd like to work with.

If you're looking for a beta reader, please post a few details on the story you're writing and what kind of help you're interested in finding.

Thanks a bunch!

I've recently had to discontinue the smaller site we had for off-topic stories in order to conserve resources and lighten the financial burden a bit.

I sent out an e-mail to members over there a couple of weeks ago but unfortunately, it didn't get through to most of the users. Because of this, they didn't have the opportunity to save stories and reviews before the site closed. Despite my efforts, I was unable to retrieve a backup from my web host.

To those members, I really do apologize. I feel terrible about the miscommunication.

In the meantime, just a couple of things for LotRFF members...

First, I'm going to be revising the rules here to allow for off-topic stories again. As before, I ask you not to use this site for personal blogging and random posts more suited to a LiveJournal or social networking. Please limit yourself to fictional stories, poetry and essays.

Second, please be sure to back up your stories and reviews from time to time. It's best to store a copy on your own computer but even if you can't do that, saving them in your email account can be a good idea. Most of them have plenty of storage these days.

LotRFF here to stay and you'll have plenty of notice if that ever changes. But it's always good to keep your own copy of anything that's important to you. The internet isn't perfect, mistakes happen and even though I do everything I can to protect and keep regular backups of your data, I'm still only one person and don't have the capability to offer absolute guarantees the way a major company would.

Thankfully, we've never had errors with data loss here on LotRFF. I don't foresee it ever happening, but I'd still like you guys to have that extra security and peace of mind.

Thanks to the support and generosity of the wonderful community we have here, we're back and I don't believe we have to worry about shutting down now or anytime in the near future.

Over the past couple of days, I've optimized the site and performed various upgrades both with the software and our hosting. Everything seems to be running smoothly, but I'm going to keep an eye on things and if we run into any future problems, I'll simply move us to a different server.
Again, I'd really like to say just how much I appreciate all of you, whether you were able to contribute or not. The feedback and an incredible support so many people have shown over the past couple of days definitely reminded me what an invaluable place this has grown to be over the past six years... one I never want to lose.

On one last note, I'd like to apologize if anyone was distressed by our recent issues. To be clear, I have backups of everything on this site, so stories will never be lost permanently no matter what happens. However, when it comes to anything you post on the internet that is particularly valuable to you, it's always a great idea to keep a backup copy on your local hard drive anyway.

For now, let's just all breathe a huge sigh of relief. And please feel free to dive right back in and read, update and review whatever stories you like.
It's great to be back!

Hacker Alert
I received notification earlier today that spam and other inappropriate material was being posted under one of our author's accounts. I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but this was by no means done by the person who owns the account. It seems that a spammer got in under her password and has been abusing the review system.

To protect your account and the site, please read the following tips:

1.) Choose a password that is hard to guess, with both numbers and letters. Even better if it's not a dictionary word.

2.) Change your password often.

3.) Stay up to date on your virus and spyware scans. Sometimes when this happens, it's because a person has unknowingly downloaded spyware or key loggers onto their computer, allowing access to private information like passwords.

4.) Please report any spam or inappropriate activity directly to me. If it's happening under what looks like a legitimate account, do not contact the member with angry messages. It's very likely that they don't even know this is happening in the first place.

Big, Big Changes
First of all, I wanted to let you guys know there's been a huge backlog on my e-mail lately. I've resolved the problem, but I'm still receiving messages that were delayed by this issue. You should be able to e-mail me now, but if you already have, please know that I'm not ignoring you and I'm getting back to things as I receive them.

Second, I'm sure you'll notice that I've created new layouts. We needed a fresh change, a system that was easier to navigate and a generally cleaner, more spacious look. If there is an access issue for anyone, I can reformat one of our old layouts to provide for that. Just let me know. Also, please notify me of any bugs you might come across.

Third, there are new Submission Rules, Terms of Service and an updated Help page in the left hand navigation. I ask that all posting members read and review the guidelines, as there have been a few changes and clarifications on what we do and do not allow here. I'm still trying to be very flexible, but I feel like the system has been abused in a number of ways lately and since I haven't had the time to monitor everything, it's gotten a little out of control.
I'm going to be working on getting things cleaned up in the upcoming weeks, but in the meantime, please be sure you understand the rules.

Also, you'll notice that there are links to two other sites in the right-hand navigation. One is a new fiction archive I designed for more general writing and other fandoms, which you are welcome to join if you wish. The other is the long established forum that is connected with that site. I've wanted to give folks around here a place to post in a message board format for quite some time, but I just don't have the time or the resources to launch, monitor and maintain another one. With the existing message board, we already have plenty of users, a good moderation team and a comfortable environment, so if you're looking to be social, feel free to try it out!

For most of you this won't be an issue, but we are intending to monitor this site much more closely in the future after a multitude of recent violations. If you come across anything problematic or if you simply have suggestions on how we could improve further, please let me know. This site is a lot of work and it's extremely difficult to stay on top of everything, but I do want to make sure that this remains a comfortable site of high quality for everyone.

Thank you!

Beta Reading…
We do have a system where people can list themselves as beta readers in their profiles. However, I've been receiving a lot of e-mail lately from both people looking for a beta and those offering their services as one.

Please post a comment here if either of these applies to you. Hopefully we can match up more willing betas with compatible authors if we have a single post right on the front page for people to express their interest. Feel free to list any information that you feel might be helpful, such as the type of stories you write or are looking for and time commitment required. Thanks!

An important message regarding MSTs and parodies…
We've been receiving a lot of complaints recently, regarding some of the stories in the humor category. LotRFF has always had very strong policies about flaming and mocking, and I feel that some of the stories I'm talking about are doing just that.

Just so we're clear on our policies, parody and humor are clearly acceptable, but using direct quotes, story titles and names of other authors for the purpose of mocking their work is not. Unless you have their express permission, we ask that you don't upload any stories that use the identities and story excerpts of other members. If you have a story of this nature already on the site, we ask that you either revise or remove it as soon as you can.

I really do apologize about this, but I don't like seeing specific members singled out for mockery. I created the community with the intention of allowing everyone a comfortable place to upload their work without having to worry about being bashed or humiliated if they were not good writers and I stand by that.

If you see a lot of flaws in someone else's work here on the site, why not leave them constructive criticism, designed to help them instead? I fully encourage our members to leave honest feedback, but I don't think making fun of someone else's story does much in the way of helping them improve as writers.

New Challenges Feature
I replaced our old challenges system with something quite a bit more stable. Unfortunately, the old challenges had to be removed for the time being, but feel free to add new ones!
Adora on Jun 08 2008 04:27 am
I had to remove the challenges feature, as it was causing technical problems in our databases. Apparently this module was released before it had fully been checked for errors, so for the sake of site stability, it had to go.

I would be happy to replace this with a more stable version, depending on member interest. If it is something you guys are using on a regular basis and would like a new version of the feature, please let me know. Thanks!

Site updates
I just updated our software, so please let me know if you run across any bugs. You can leave me a comment here or you can contact me directly using the link in the top menu. Thanks!

Edit: it seems that the problem we were having in regards to people receiving review notifications by e-mail is probably due to capitalization in e-mail addresses. Please check your user info and make sure your e-mail address is in all lowercase letters. Let me know if you have any further problems with this issue.

E-mail notifications?
I just wanted to know how many of you are having an issue receiving e-mail notifications for reviews and such. I've gotten feedback from a couple people on this and I'm trying to find out if it's an issue that is specific to a few people or a sitewide problem.

On the subject of age restrictions
As I'm sure you're all aware, this is an all ages site. Since we carry stories of every possible rating here, you are obligated to confirm your age before posting or accessing the more adult stories contained in our archive. If you are under the legal age of consent where you live, we in no way support you accessing materials that are not appropriate for your age group. Of course, beyond having you consent that you ARE over the legal age, there's really no way to monitor these things on a simple, free web site.

I have considered making this an adults only archive, but there is already so much material and so many longtime posters here that have nothing to do with adult content. Therefore, we have to trust you when you consent that you are old enough to post and access our R and NC17 rated stories.

Starting today however, if any member is found violating this rule, I will unfortunately be required to remove their account. Please be responsible and with your help, this shouldn't be a major issue.

Please report any violations directly to me, through the contact link at the top of the page. Thanks!
Adora on Mar 15 2008 10:19 pm
Site Themes!
I finally found enough time today to customize some themes for the new version of our software. There are five in total and they are simple, but I hope you all find one that suits you. These should be compatible with all browsers but if you find any bugs, please let me know.

Dark/light themes -basically four different color variations on my favorite theme out of the bunch. With all of these, you can see that we now feature a poll. I will be changing this out about once every couple of weeks, so please send me an e-mail if you have a good idea for a question for the next one!

Simplicity -this is a very plain, high contrast theme designed for the vision impaired, those with very slow connections and anyone else who has computer issues that make it difficult for them to access the other themes. Nothing fancy, but provides functionality for those who might not have it otherwise.

Thanks a bunch, guys!

Receiving strange error messages?
You may occasionally receive an error message that tells you "this account has exceeded its CPU quota." What this means is that we're using a few too many resources on our current hosting package and has nothing to do with individual accounts of members. When you pay for a web hosting package, it is basically the space, bandwidth and memory required to run a web site. When the web site gets to be too big or too active, sometimes you max out these resources and you get an error message like you're seeing on the site.

I have paid additional funds and put in a request to be moved to a new hosting package that has enough resources for us, but this process will take 1 to 2 weeks. Please be patient and if you get the error message in the meantime, just wait a minute or two and refresh the page. It always goes away after a couple of minutes.

Thank you for your understanding. Running web sites can be a complicated business, but I'm doing the best I can to get all of this web site hosting stuff straight so we won't have any more downtime or error messages.

Please contact me at if you would like to make a donation to the site fund. It does get very expensive to keep this all going and I can always use the help.
