Site updates
I just updated our software, so please let me know if you run across any bugs. You can leave me a comment here or you can contact me directly using the link in the top menu. Thanks!

Edit: it seems that the problem we were having in regards to people receiving review notifications by e-mail is probably due to capitalization in e-mail addresses. Please check your user info and make sure your e-mail address is in all lowercase letters. Let me know if you have any further problems with this issue.

E-mail notifications?
I just wanted to know how many of you are having an issue receiving e-mail notifications for reviews and such. I've gotten feedback from a couple people on this and I'm trying to find out if it's an issue that is specific to a few people or a sitewide problem.

On the subject of age restrictions
As I'm sure you're all aware, this is an all ages site. Since we carry stories of every possible rating here, you are obligated to confirm your age before posting or accessing the more adult stories contained in our archive. If you are under the legal age of consent where you live, we in no way support you accessing materials that are not appropriate for your age group. Of course, beyond having you consent that you ARE over the legal age, there's really no way to monitor these things on a simple, free web site.

I have considered making this an adults only archive, but there is already so much material and so many longtime posters here that have nothing to do with adult content. Therefore, we have to trust you when you consent that you are old enough to post and access our R and NC17 rated stories.

Starting today however, if any member is found violating this rule, I will unfortunately be required to remove their account. Please be responsible and with your help, this shouldn't be a major issue.

Please report any violations directly to me, through the contact link at the top of the page. Thanks!

Site Themes!
I finally found enough time today to customize some themes for the new version of our software. There are five in total and they are simple, but I hope you all find one that suits you. These should be compatible with all browsers but if you find any bugs, please let me know.

Dark/light themes -basically four different color variations on my favorite theme out of the bunch. With all of these, you can see that we now feature a poll. I will be changing this out about once every couple of weeks, so please send me an e-mail if you have a good idea for a question for the next one!

Simplicity -this is a very plain, high contrast theme designed for the vision impaired, those with very slow connections and anyone else who has computer issues that make it difficult for them to access the other themes. Nothing fancy, but provides functionality for those who might not have it otherwise.

Thanks a bunch, guys!

Receiving strange error messages?
You may occasionally receive an error message that tells you "this account has exceeded its CPU quota." What this means is that we're using a few too many resources on our current hosting package and has nothing to do with individual accounts of members. When you pay for a web hosting package, it is basically the space, bandwidth and memory required to run a web site. When the web site gets to be too big or too active, sometimes you max out these resources and you get an error message like you're seeing on the site.

I have paid additional funds and put in a request to be moved to a new hosting package that has enough resources for us, but this process will take 1 to 2 weeks. Please be patient and if you get the error message in the meantime, just wait a minute or two and refresh the page. It always goes away after a couple of minutes.

Thank you for your understanding. Running web sites can be a complicated business, but I'm doing the best I can to get all of this web site hosting stuff straight so we won't have any more downtime or error messages.

Please contact me at if you would like to make a donation to the site fund. It does get very expensive to keep this all going and I can always use the help.

Moved And Upgraded
I have finished moving and upgrading the website. Please keep in mind that it takes about 24 hours for everything to show up for some people but overall, things should be back to normal within the next few hours. Feel free to upload your stories, leave reviews and get back to all of your usual activities on the site.

It's fairly common with any major change or upgrade to have some bugs when using various features. Please report this to me immediately in the comments of this news item if you come across them.

Otherwise, I will finish working on the site themes and adding additional features tomorrow. Thanks!
Adora on Sep 04 2007 05:53 pm
This site is in read only mode while I move us to a different web host and perform some much needed upgrades on our software. Feel free to browse around and read stories, but you will not be able to add stories or reviews until the process is complete.

Please be patient, this will only take about one day.

Awards this Year?
The Flame of Anor awards have been extremely successful for the past two years and many people have genuinely enjoyed getting involved, whether by submitting stories, judging or simply reading all of the great entries we receive. I have received many questions about this year's awards, mainly as to whether or not we are going to do them again.

Thing is, this takes a lot of work from multiple people and once again, I would have to organize a staff of judges, a system for submissions and voting and many other issues. I'm not entirely adverse to doing this but first, I wanted to see what the level of interest is this year. Please let me know how you feel about running the awards again and also if you're interested in being a judge if we do.

You must be a legal adult in your region to be a judge, due to the wide variety of content we receive through submissions. However, we will accept nominations from all members, regardless of age.

We are asking ALL AUTHORS to make sure their fics are properly labeled and in the correct category with the proper warnings so those who wish to avoid certain types of stories can do so. We truly love this site and want it to be the best archive of LOTR fan fiction out there. But it's also about you, the author and reader. We must respect each other and accept that we all won't agree on story content. It is just as disrespectful to not label a fic properly as it is for someone to leave a inappropriate comment.

Slash authors: Please note that slash is not necessarily graphic sex between two male characters. Slash is a sexual attraction that need not be acted on or may be one-sided between two members of the same sex, male or female. If your story contains slash, even between minor characters, even if the majority of your story is het or nonslash, then your story requires a slash warning and should be placed in a slash sub-category (you may, however, use a nonslash category if slash is only incidental to the story).

*Rule of thumb: If your fic contains something that could make it fit - even only slightly - under a certain category, genre, or warning...make sure you use that category, genre, and/or warning. This does not only refer to slash, but bookverse vs movieverse and warnings such as: graphic sex, violence, character death, extreme fetish, AU, incest, mpreg, rape, torture, etc. The site permits the use of multiple categories, genres, and warnings on a story, so there's no excuse not to use this feature. If in doubt, use more labels and a higher rating and/or ask a mod.*

Readers: if you come across a story that you believe is improperly labeled or doesn't contain the correct warnings, please advise one of the mods or contact the webmaster so that it may be corrected.

We are a very diverse community here and a close-knit one as well. We are proud to be part of a site where so many different authors feel free to post. In no way do we wish to censor people from posting their stories regardless of their content. BUT we do ask you to show respect to those members who may not share your same tastes in literature by making sure ALL your fics (new or posted previously) are in the proper category and contain the proper warnings.

Thanks everyone! You guys make this site a great place to be!

It has come to my attention that some members (including myself) have received very complimentary and near identical invitations to sign up and start posting work at I wish to advise those of you who are considering posting your work there, that the TOS (Terms of Service) states:

"You hereby grant FanLib a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free and transferable license to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and perform the Submissions in connection with the Website."

This means that, a for profit site, is going to let you keep ownership of your work, but take total freedom to do what they like with it and earn from it without paying you a cent. This means that you lose control over your work, therefore losing ownership too. This is aside from the tenuous legalities of whether a site can profit from fanfiction. In my experience, fanfiction has always dodged copyright laws because it is nonprofit and written with the original author's consent or rather, lack of disconsent.

I am not saying don't post there (I will say that I have no intention of posting there myself until the TOS improves, though), but I am saying please read and consider the terms carefully because I am concerned that some members here will or have not done so. Please.

Edit: As requested, following is an unedited complete copy of the email invite that I received on Apr 20, 2007 10:04 AM. Subject was "Your Lord of the Rings fanfics":

Hi Susan,

I saw some of your Lord of the Rings fan fiction online and really enjoyed your writing. I work for a brand-new fan fiction website called and my colleagues and I want it to be the ultimate place for talented writers like you. In case you're wondering, FanLib's not new to fan fiction. Since 2001, we've been producing web events with people like CBS, Showtime and HarperCollins to bring fan creativity into the big leagues.

We're impressed by your writing and impact in the fan fiction community, and we value your opinion. That's why we're inviting you to be among the first to experience

Feel free to take a look around, upload some fics, maybe read and comment on a few. Do as much or as little as you like. On, you'll be able to connect with other first-rate writers like yourself and exchange ideas with the site creators. Also, stay tuned for our sweepstakes, which will give fanfic writers and reviewers a chance to win prizes.

Don't worry, you won't get spammed. We're not selling anything. We just want you to try the site and hopefully give us some feedback.

We look forward to having you as a founding member. Together, we can create the greatest fan fiction site the web's ever seen!

FanLib Launch Coordinator

This message was sent to you from Lord of the Rings Fanfiction located at

Naomi (a.k.a. railroadwings) has been a member of this site since the 19th of this month. I think it is therefore safe to assume she signed up for the sole purpose of emailing authors by way of the contact gadget thingy that is on each member page. Unless you reply to her invite by email, she will not know your email address from this site.

Line Breaks
Several members have been using long lines of repeated symbols in order to create line breaks. This creates problems on the site. A line break can be made by using the html hr and /hr .
For example: Use this

not entire lines of this: ~~~ or this ---
Please, if you are using lines of more than five consecutive symbols as line breaks replace them with the proper html symbols. The allowed html on this site is as follows:
strong, em, br, blockquote, strike, font, b, i , u, center, img, a, hr, p, ul , li, ol.
Remember to always place the proper closing html tag. If you use hr for examlple it must be followed at the end by /hr. There should be a list of html symbols each time you edit a story to help you remember which ones work on this site

Thank you!

Member info. Reminder
This is just a friendly reminder. It is never a good idea to put information online that can identify you in real life. There are just too many crazy people out there who would use such things in the wrong way. Everyone please be careful and if you are under 18 be sure to check with your parents before putting any personal information on this or any other web site.

Current Status of Things -- Please Read!
First of all, this site is in read only mode right now. This means that you are not able to login, post comments or upload stories. Browsing and reading should work fine.

I'm still working on things and ironing out a few bugs so until then, access will be limited.

I've already gotten a lot accomplished in the way of making the site more stable and secure and moving us to a better server. However, there are other issues that have been causing a lot of problems around here. I want you guys to bear in mind that I'm only one person and it's simply not possible for me to monitor everything that users submit. I've gotten so frustrated recently that I almost shut down the site permanently. But I don't think responsible members should have to miss out either and so the site is going to stay online.

I'm going to be cracking down on things around here though. I'm sorry if I seem harsh, but after spending the last 18 hours beating my brains out and trying to fix so many unnecessary issues, I can't help being frustrated. Even more so because so many of these things are avoidable if people would just follow the rules.

I'm going to make things very clear in this post and if people continue to ignore our guidelines, I'm going to start banning them outright without warning. I'm sorry, but I simply don't have time to follow after people who repeatedly violate the rules. So if anything below applies to your account, I suggest you fix the issues as soon as account access is restored.
  1. This is a fanfiction site, which means that you are permitted to post stories, essays and poetry only. You are not to use the system as a personal journal, for advertising purposes, homework help, to share chat scripts or anything else that does not qualify as fictional writing. A small authors note at the beginning of the story is fine but I don't like seeing multiple chapters devoted to what a person had for breakfast. That's not what this site is for.

  2. Again, please do not use excessive amounts of multiple characters in your words. What I mean is using 20 exclamation points and things of that nature. Not only is unnecessary but it causes a lot of problems with the code it takes to run this site. In fact, a person who recently updated used slashes to turn her summary into one extremely long word and it caused the entire layout go out of whack. I spent several hours trying to figure out what was wrong with the code before I realized what was causing it. If you must emphasize something, like the word "no", please do not use anything more than three or four extra characters.

  3. I understand that not everyone has perfect spelling and grammatical skills. But please, do not post stories that are just full of errors that you're not willing to fix and particularly, please don't use netspeak/chatspeak in your stories. To clarify, I mean things like u instead of you, ur instead of your and so forth. That's fine for instant messaging but it doesn't belong in stories. I know it takes a bit more effort, but if you do your best to correct the errors in your story and type things out so people can understand them, you'll generally get more positive reviews.

  4. Finally, please take special care when adding warnings, labels and summaries to your stories. It's important to keep things properly categorized not only so people can find them but also so that people who are offended by more graphic situations can avoid stories that contain them.

I'm interested in taking on moderators to help check over stories and make sure that the rules are being followed. You can send an e-mail to if you're interested, but I would like any potential moderators to meet the following requirements:
  • I'm only looking for people who are 18 and older at this point, due to the adult nature of many of the stories that will require moderation.

  • Please contact me only if you're serious about this responsibility. I understand if you have to take a break for any reason, but I would like people who will let me know if they're no longer able to moderate or have to take an extended break rather than just disappearing like folks have in the past.

Thanks a bunch and I will have the site fully restored as soon as possible!

Happy Holidays/Beta Readers!
First and foremost, I wanted to wish all of you a very safe and happy holiday season!

Also, many of you have expressed interest in either finding or offering your services as a beta reader. Since the forums are down indefinitely, I'm just going to put this topic right on the front page. Please leave your comments here if you are in need of a beta reader or would like to offer your services as one.

Thanks a bunch!

All Is Well
I really appreciate the support regarding the plagiarism issue and I wanted to let you guys know that it's all resolved now.

That being said, I hope everyone who celebrates has a wonderful Thanksgiving tomorrow! And for the rest of you who may not, I hope you have a lovely weekend!
Adora on Nov 22 2006 12:45 pm
Several of you contacted me last week to notify me that an author on had directly stolen large portions of my story and was trying to pass them off as her own. At the time, I didn't want to make a big issue out of it and I tried to work with her to correct the problem.

She had initially removed my parts from her story but I received another e-mail today and came to the realization that she's doing it all over again. The story is awful and it's extremely embarrassing to have my quotes in there alongside hers. That's not even mentioning the fact that it's incredibly wrong to steal from other authors anyway.

The stories are not my best work and have actually been up here for a couple of years. I've been intending to redo them but I just haven't had time yet. Now I'm considering taking them down completely because of this.

The author won't seem to listen to me but if you want to leave her some feedback on my behalf, here is the address to the story:

My parts are little further down in that chapter but you should be able to recognize them, as the writing style is completely different.

Thanks and I hope this never happens to any of you. It feels like such a violation to have somebody rip off your work this way.

ETA: Evidently the author is actually plagiarizing someone on this site who has plagiarized me. This grows even more complicated but I do have to say that plagiarism will not be allowed on the site under any circumstances. If you see any in the future, please report it to me immediately.
Adora on Nov 20 2006 08:49 pm
I'm sure that a lot of you guys are pretty tired of the downtime by now. The good news is that it's over and all reviews and previous information have been restored just as they were before. You are now free to review and post stories to your heart's content without having to worry about losing any data.

Now I'm going to explain why this took so long and why we had so many errors. If you post on this site, you need to read the following or you may risk your account being deleted for violating a new rule we have here.

I don't mean to be a jerk about this but I have spent the last week struggling and pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to fix the reviews database and I came to realize that the bugs happened because some of the members have been abusing the system.

I spent quite a few hours combing through over 7000 reviews trying to fix these problems. What I am referring to specifically is people that feel the need to add 40 exclamation points at the end of their words. What I'm talking about is members who press down keys and hold them, making words that are a paragraph long. For example, the word "yay" has three letters. There's absolutely no logical reason why you need to put 20 a's in the middle of it.

I understand that people get excited when they read a good story but please, type out your words NORMALLY instead of making them into an endless string of repetitive letters? The database simply can't process unnaturally long strings of information like that and besides, it's rather rude anyway.

We have a new rule here and that is if I see anyone typing things with any more than THREE of the same letter, number or punctuation in a row, I will either give them a warning or I will DELETE THEIR ACCOUNT. I apologize if this seems harsh but I am simply not going to go through the ordeal of trying to fix things that shouldn't be broken this way. The site would've been back up and fine a week ago if it hadn't been for this problem.

I want you guys to express yourselves openly here but please lay off the sticky fingers, okay? The rest of the members shouldn't have to suffer through a broken site over such a minor issue.
Adora on Oct 17 2006 12:18 pm
Another Update
I have been working on morning, trying to repair the problem with the reviews. Unfortunately, I had to revert to the backup from yesterday so if you have posted since then, that's where the stories went. I'm sorry about that but I was being rushed to put the site back up and I didn't have the time to iron out all of the kinks.

I honestly don't know what is going on with the reviews. I'm trying my best to fix things but nothing is working. I will keep trying different things but in the end, I don't know if we are going to be able to save them. I will keep you posted. I need you guys to just read for the next day or so and not leave reviews or post stories so that hopefully we can get this fixed.
Adora on Oct 13 2006 04:44 am
And We're Back!
I apologize for the downtime but the good news is that we are officially relocated to our permanent server!

Switching servers for such a large web site is a very tedious process and even under the best of circumstances, there are sure to be a few glitches that need to be worked out.

We are having a couple of problems with the review system. Rest assured that all past data is safe but the review counts are not displaying properly yet. Additionally, you must go to the first chapter of any story to see the full list of reviews.

The other glitch is that the link that takes you back to the story after a review is left currently returns you to the main page. I am well aware of both of these issues and I'm currently working on them.

If you find any glitches or problems that are NOT listed above, please report them to me in the comments section of this news item. I have not reactivated my e-mail account yet.

I've been running this site for over two years now at my own time, effort and expense. I decided from the start that I was not going to put paid advertisements and other annoyances on the site. I don't like cluttering things up with that garbage but the consequence of that decision is that things do get more pricey around here. I will NEVER charge anyone to use this site as much as they wish to so it seems the best solution is to put up a button for optional donations via PayPal.

This is by no means a requirement but it is always appreciated. Even a very small donation, no more than the price of a cup of coffee, would do a lot to help out around here. Thank you very much for being great members, regardless of whether you choose to donate or not. I really do appreciate you guys!
Adora on Sep 22 2006 09:11 pm
Unfortunate News
I'm afraid the site crashed over the weekend and the last backup the host had available was from August 5th. That means that anything that has been posted over the last month, including chapters, reviews and any new accounts that have been created are gone. I am so sorry about this and please believe that I am just as upset as you guys are. Unfortunately, this was a level above me and out of my hands.

We are going to be moving to a new host to ensure that something like this never happens again. It will also mean no more downtime and a site that is generally a lot more stable.

I am going to have to take down the forums and reinstall them after we move but everything else should be fine. Again, I am so sorry.

All data you may have added to the site over the past month will need to be added again but I promise you that nothing like this will happen in the future. I feel terrible.
