Flame of Anor Awards- Judging complete!
The judging for the Flame of Anor Awards is finished! Sorry it took so long but with so many wonderful stories, it took the judges quite awhile to read them all and carefully consider each one. I think we all owe them a big "thank you" for their time and effort and we particularly owe gratitude to Tinara for overseeing all of this for us this year!

Over the next couple of days, a public poll will be posted and you guys will be able to vote between two stories in each category to determine the final winner. This poll will run for two weeks, then the awards will be offically announced!

In the meantime, watch this space!

Moderators and Other News
Thanks so much to everyone who replied to the "help needed" post! To answer the biggest question, this job only requires as much time as you'd like to give it. Any help is appreciated, there's no limit either way.

For those who expressed interest, please send me an email at webmaster@lotrfanfiction.com and I'll give you more details/add you on as moderator if you'd like. Its an easy job, really.

In other news, nominations for the Flame of Anor Awards are officially closed and our judges will be narrowing everything down over the next few weeks for the public voting. We received a ton of wonderful entries this year, thank you!

Also, a general thank you for being the best batch of members around. It truly is a pleasure to run this site and interact with you guys!

Help Needed
Hey guys,

As of right now, I run everything here at LotR Fanfiction myself and its getting to be a little too much. I'd really like to upgrade a few members to moderators who could help "share the load" as Samwise Gamgee would say. :)

Currently, I need moderators in two different categories:

1.) Site moderator: Your duties would include checking over stories, making sure they are in proper categories with the correct ratings and warnings and that they adhere to our submission rules. Due to the content of various stories, I can only accept site moderators who are over the age of 18.

2.) Forum moderator: Your responsibilities would include keeping threads on topic, deleting inappropriate posts and generally helping to maintain a mature and respectful environment over at our forums. Experience with forum moderation is preferred but not neccessary.

Anyone interested in helping out?

Two Things
First, nominations for the Flame of Anor Awards will be ending on April 15th. Please go here to nominate stories!

Also, I've opened a new topic at the forums that some of you might be interested in called the "Reviewer Buddy System." I had this idea for those people who receive less reviews than they would like to. Basically, you can make a post about your fanfiction and a person who reads/writes stories of a similiar nature can volunteer to become your review buddy. You would then make a point of keeping track of and leaving feedback on each other's work.

Please note that you must register seperately to use the forums, even if you're already a member of the site.

Finished!
Everything's finished with the upgrade. I know some people were having trouble with the original layout so I made three new ones. There's a dark one, a light one and a very simple one for older browsers and slower connections. You can change the look and the feel of the site from the drop down menu on every page. I upgraded the forums as well and fixed all sorts of bugs.

Let me know how everything's working for you guys now!

Site Upgrade
I've just upgraded all of our software and scripts. We have a ton of new features so feel free to explore the new site! Let me know if you find any bugs. The transfer went smoothly but I haven't tested everything yet.

New features include:

Option to stay logged in
Email notifications when your favorite stories update
Users now categorized as members, authors and/or beta readers
Challenges section
Top tens
Newest member feature
Statistics
Much, much more!

I'll be tweaking everything later today and restoring links to places such as the forums, affiliates and the Flame of Anor Awards page. For now, I'm off to get some much needed sleep!

Awards Delayed
I'm afraid that the Flame of Anor Awards nominations will have to be delayed until we find enough judges for all of the categories. I am updating the rules to state that you can become a judge if your story is nominated, as long as you are judging a different category.

The good news is that our forums are finally back up! Please note that you'll have to register seperately to post there.

If you are interested in judging for the Flame of Anor Awards, please post in the forums under the appropriate topic and let me know!

Second Annual Flame of Anor Awards
Things have been pretty hectic for me lately so I apologize that I'm a little late with this. Here is how we are going to do the awards this year:

First, I need two judges for each category. If you are interested, I ask that you have fair to good knowledge of Tolkien-verse and that you have an understanding of proper spelling, grammar, punctuation and formatting. Also its important to note that once you are a judge, your stories cannot be nominated for the awards.

In order to make the process fair and impartial, the nominations will go through two levels as they are narrowed down for voting. The first judge in a category will choose four stories, then the second judge will read and choose the two from those that she thinks are best. Those two stories will be the ones that all site members will be able to vote on.

We will have nine categories this year:

Best Book-verse

Best Movie-verse

Best Drama/Angst

Best Humor/Parody

Best Friendship

Best Short Story/One Shot

Best Original Character

Best Romance

Best Slash Romance

If you wish to become a judge, please e-mail me at webmaster@lotrfanfiction.com and let me know which categories you would be willing to read for. Being a judge does require some level of dedication and quite a bit of reading, so I ask that if you volunteer that you have sufficient time and effort to devote to it.

I will be re-opening the forums this weekend with a special section for our judges to work together as the awards progress and nominations will be opened this Saturday for all site members. At that time, I'll go over the rules for submissions.

Reminders/Requests
We've been having a few problems with usernames and story summaries as of late. As far as usernames, please do not create accounts with more than 10 letters in a single word. This causes problems with the layout when you upload new stories.

Summaries: Please do not use all caps, bold or italics in your summaries or story titles. Please use proper spelling, capitalization and punctuation as well.

Though I try to edit any titles and summaries that violate these guidelines, I am a very busy person and don't always have the time to do this myself. Please save me some time and try to keep these things in mind.

Also, I'm thinking of removing all of our old skins and just keeping the new green/black layout. Are there any objections to this?

Thanks a bunch guys!

Site Awards
Last year, we held the Flame of Anor Awards and everyone seemed fairly pleased with them. Are you guys interested in having them again this year? If so, we'll start the contest on December 1st with open nominations for the best fanfiction in 12 different categories.

This year, I'll probably select a specific group of judges who have no stories of their own nominated. I'd like it to be as unbiased as possible.

Let me know what you guys think.

Good News/Bad News
Bad news is that our server was hacked, which is why the site has been down lately. Good new is that our wonderful host managed to fix everything for us.

Unfortunately, our backups weren't up to date so any stories you've updated, information added or accounts you registered within the past month will have to be re-added. I'm so sorry about this and we are taking definitive steps to ensure that it never happens again.

Thanks so much and please accept my apologies.

Skins are back!
I did a little makeover on the site which includes 22 new skins.

We've gained many new members since we last used this feature and if you're not familiar with it, all you have to do is select the skin you'd like from the menu under "edit personal information." Once you save, it will change the entire appearance of the site to suit your tastes whenever you're logged in.

Another new feature is our "Moderator's Corner", which is a place for the site's staff to post articles and essays relating to writing fanfiction.

I hope everyone enjoys the improvements! Feedback is always appreciated.

Reminder
When voting for stories, please make sure to fill out both the name and e-mail boxes on the form. No one sees these but me and you certainly won't be spammed. The reason I ask for these is to:

A.) Make sure you're a member of the site
B.) To ensure that each person only votes once per category

I have to discard entries without identification, so please submit your votes again if you previously omitted this information.

Thank you!

Voting for the Flame of Anor Awards is officially open!
It was incredibly difficult to narrow it down, as so many wonderful stories and poems were nominated, but somehow we managed to choose what we felt to be the best three (sometimes four) in each category. Thank you so much to everyone who has helped me out with ideas, category readings and everything else!

The rest is up to all of you!

The rules are pretty simple- please only vote once per category. We ask you not to vote for your own work, as we are trying to keep the results as fair and objective as possible.

Voting will end on February 4th, at which time we will announce the winners.

SITE UPDATES!
The first thing you will probably notice is the addition of separate categories for slash stories. I decided that at the rate which we are growing, this option would make it much easier to find the type of fics you want to read. We have moved all stories that apply to their proper categories.

There are going to be some updates to our rules in the near future, specifically involving flaming and spelling/grammar.

Regarding flaming: Its never pleasant to receive a bad review for your work but unless the review is outright harassment, try to take suggestions under consideration rather than becoming upset. Perhaps the most important tool we have as writers is the feedback we receive from each other and how we utilize it to learn and grow.
However, if a review is simply too harsh for you, delete it and ask the reviewer not to post again. If they don't respect your wishes and start to harass you, that is the point at which you need to contact me and let me deal with it.

Regarding Spelling and Grammar: I cannot stress enough the importance of using decent spelling and grammar in your stories. Even if you have the most incredible plot in the fandom, very few people will be able to read and enjoy your fic if it is fraught with errors. Please proofread your work and if grammatical formatting is not your strong suit, there are plenty of people over at the forum who would be glad to help you correct your mistakes.

Flame of Anor Awards: The cutoff date for the Flame of Anor Awards nominations is January 1st, so make sure to submit your favorite stories if you haven't done so already.

I think that's all for now. More detailed updates on site activity can always be found in the forum. I hope everyone has a happy holiday season!
