I was wonce called the Queen of Melancholy, back in college for there is often such an air about me and I enjoy it...the bitter sweet. There must be darkness if there is to be light. While most of my stories have happy endings (tho some woud argue that is no the case in "All Things Must Pass" there is often a bit od Darkness too them. If you have not read my Sons of Rohan series you might enjoy 'The Captain's Daughter' as it is the darkest of them. It can stand alone. Thanks again for reading!

Author's Response: Most 19 year old boys who get hit...deserve it. He was crass and rude and totally oblivious; that's our dear Eomer...a heart of gold but lacks the mouth filter (Think about his comments in ROTK about Merry and the reach of his sword) The sequelish prequel will help give insight to Gamling's reaction AND his relationship with Eomer. As it stands, Gamling and Theoden King have a special connection as well. BUT Gamling is honorable so he will accept what ever consequences there may be.

Kinda the straw that broke the camel's back. Of course at his age, he really should not go around hitting 19 year olds---even if they don't keep their mouth in check ;)

Ah, I should have seen that this story does not belong to the series... makes much more sense then ;-)

I wonder how Kelda will take the news that the other women were willing to pay for her. She doesn't seem like one who would just take it with a graceful 'thanks'.

I was a little bit surprised though. Usually the laws of the lands you are on apply, and not the laws of the foreigners you are dealing with. Would be rather a nuisance to always have to know with whom you are dealing just to know which laws apply, and to know the laws in the first place when you are only a merchant who is never leaving his own town...
But I guess one never knows, her uncle might have agreed by contract to use the laws of his homeland.

For now it will be interesting to see how Kelda will react to that sudden and unexpected change in lifestyle. I guess she'll be rather uncomfortable at first.

Author's Response: I know it is a bit fuzzy, but let me try to clairify. A gambling dept is a debt and a person MUST repay it regardless of country of origin. In Kelda's uncle's case, he died before her could repay the debt and as gambles often do--did not tell Kelda about it. Then the Inn Keeper came to collect, he knew he was dealing with an extremely honest and perhaps a bit nieve woman. I am sure he smiled and pleaded hardship at the loss and played on her sence of honor, reminding her of the laws she is bound to follow as a citizen of Dale. She had to sell her uncles property to pay most of the dept so she really had no place to go, anyway. Now, you are right. A simple THANK YOU will not do for Kelda; she is to honorable for that. But that resolution will come in time... I hope this helps clear up the gabling thing. If the Inn keeper was an honorable man, he would either erased the dead mans debt OR not taken every last thing Kelda had...but he saw something--someone--he wanted.

Author's Response: Thanks! I like playing in Tolkien's sandbox but at time, he does not off the information I need. When I embelish HIS thoughts I want to be sure and try to keep it reasonable. I imagine Tolkien as Iluvitar--his is the MASTER SONG and I am only a Vala who sings my thought into the song for the glory of his work. Plus, I like being able to back up what I write! It will be interesting for her, that is for sure.

But that is an interesting legal problem now, isn't it?

If the debt was never her's to pay, then maybe she could simply step out of the duty. But maybe accepting to pay back the debt might have bound her legally.
According to German law, I think, the debt would be null and void now that she knows that the Innkeeper hadn't really any claim to it, she might even get back everything she has paid off until now and maybe be given some compensation.

And may I ask: where did you get all the information in the author's note? That would really interest me. As I said once and once again: I enjoy reading well-researched stories!


Author's Response: The problem is that she comes from Dale (not in Rohan) and by thier law, any living rlitive is required to repay the debt. However, in Rohan that is not the case--only immediate famly (wife/adult childern) need to repay it and may take as long as necessary so as to not over burden the famling. So, she is following her laws and know little if not nothing of the Laws of Rohan. As for all the info in the author's note: Tolkien makes reference to copper coins so I used that and a bit or reasearch on mideval currancy and then pieced it to gether. I acctually checked out the relationship of military income of enlisted men to officers and them sort-of created a payscale. I wanted it to be a large debt but on that Gamling could easily pay (thought he would not carry so much). I decided that "wenching" as it is the oldest profession would be a woman's choice and although decent women would not like to associate with them and they may not be the kind og girl they'd like their son's to come home with, it is accepted and they are treated well (in most cases) but not everone is a decent Rohirrim! Hope it is believable as it really is mostly information I created. Thanks!! I always love your insightful comments! Off to post more!

Yeah, that's so typically Gamling! Beneath that rough exterior beats a heart of gold. Of course he would take all the blame... stupid, lovable man, that one :-)
How can someone be that reasonable and a good advisor to all his friends and be so blind when something concerns his own life and actions?
Good that he has a friend in Erkenbrand at his side...

Author's Response: So very true! But I find that is often how er all are. Able to help others but unable to take our own advice. He is a very honoorable man (like all my Riders) Erkenbrand will help him along along with a few others. (I'll tell you a secret...shhhh...I already have a back story in the works that will give some insight to Gamlings character) but that is a tale of another time....first he need to get through this! Hmmm... well if running away is her reaction on it, she would have probably been better off refusing the Innkeeper. After all he did only suggest it to her vehemently but could have done nothing really if she had refused. After all she made it clear she wouldn't sleep with guests of the inn right from the beginning on.
Both ways might have caused her being fired...

At least the Innkeeper will be in 'good' hands with Erkenbrand, poor sod... *grinning evilly*
