The Reminder

I try to pull free,
But to no avail.
I know what is to come.
Please, please no,
I beg.
I feel a sharp pain.
My back throbs.
Why, why me?
I ask.
As the pain gets worse,
I weaken.
I hear laughter,
My captor’s sneer.

I collapse.
Drenched in my own blood.
My vision clouds,
Darkness surrounds me.
I shudder,
Grasping consciousness by a thread.

I hear my name.
I know the voice well;
The darkness defeats me.

The scars that paint my back,
Are the only reminder,
Of that dreadful thing that had come to pass.
The only reminder,
Of a memory that will not soon be forgotten.
